10 Breastfeeding Tips To Increase Your Supply

Like a lot of mums, I also had my doubts/fears that breastfeeding wouldn’t work for me and my baby. Breastfeeding is tough o, but it gets easier once you know the tips that make it work. Here are guidelines to help you get on a good start to produce more milk for your baby.

Start as early as you can after you put to bed. It helps the process of breastfeeding easier for you and your baby.

Get comfortable; choose a breast feeding position that works best for you. Make sure baby is properly latched on the areola, not just the nipple (if you are a new mum, ask a professional in the hospital to show you before you are discharged).

Nurse on demand, don’t wait for your newborn to start crying before you feed as this is a sign of late hunger. Breastfeeding is the best way to soothe and console your baby not necessarily when they are hungry. Offer both breast at each feeding or when your baby finishes on one breast, offer the opposite breast at the next feeding. This inspires both breasts to make more milk and to make sure the baby is emptying each breast fully.

Get a good breast pump so even when baby does not demand, you can keep your milk supply intact.

Hold off pacifiers or bottles for at least 4-6 weeks so as not to confuse baby and make baby refuse to take the breast.

Drink, Drink, Drink lots of fluid: Water, pap, tea. If you don’t like pap, try oatmeal, a bowl of oatmeal every morning will give you a full breast all day.

You can know if your baby is taking enough milk the first few days if she wets at least 4-6 diapers, poos 2-4 times daily and is looking healthy and alert. As long as you are producing enough milk, do not supplement as this will reduce your milk supply.

Take a warm bath to soothe you in the morning and at night.

Relax, Relax, Relax during breastfeeding, your baby can sense any tension you have when breastfeeding. Create a comforting and quiet area in your home to nurse your baby, dim the light and maybe play soft music breathe slowly in and out and gently stroke your baby as you nurse.

Always, always ask a doctor before you take any medicine as some medicine may affect your baby or reduce your milk production.

Yours truly,
