Yay or Nay! Parents, Would You Support This School Homework Policy?

All work and no play…………..

A Facebook user recently posted a note by a second grade elementary school teacher who has decided to try something new by not giving homework to student unless they have uncompleted work in school. This strategy, according to her is to encourage family time and allow kids do other things at home that relate with their performance at school rather than piling them with homework as most teachers do.

The post with the caption “Brooke is loving her new teacher already!” has got a lot of parents excited and has generated over 69,000 shares. According to her, since there is no known research that proves that more homework improves kids’ performance, she wrote a letter to her students’ parents pointing out the ‘all work and no play’ popular saying, kids should be allowed to relax and play after school, parents should spend more quality time with their children and let them go to bed early so as to wake up on time to get ready for another day.

It’s not uncommon to find parents coming back after work to meet a pile of homework to assist their kids with or having to wake them very early to get an unfinished homework done before school.

“Eat dinner as a family, read together, play outside and get your child to bed early” were her suggestions to get the best out of her students in the new school year.

Do you think a lot of homework isn’t necessary to improve kids’ performance? Teacher-parent relationship is important to keep up with your child’s school activities, would you like your children’s school teacher to consider this policy especially for elementary kids?

Please share your thoughts.

  1. Hi Kemi,
Nice discuss here. An important area in daily family life.
Well, my experience as a parent has shown that the modern day living made parenting tasking for the parents and children compared to our time. It also depends on a number of factors.
Children travelling far distance in school bus wit multiple drop offs, traffic issues to late coming in evenings. Child is exhausted, and fagged out just want to free himself/herself , parents hurrying to ensure homework finished before bedtime.
Child feeling overwhelmed, Parents getting frustrated as time runs out, homework needs to be finished, good image to be created in school as nt being violators avoiding assignments.
In my opinion, moderation is it. Balancing both ends in terms of number of times per week, amount given and relevance with age .
May our Efforts as Parents be crowned on the Kids and see to their success of being the best they can be.
