Never mind me on this Mullen family video
but I like it, the kids really impressed me, so I made a list of tips for parenting I learnt from the video.
If you’ve not seen the video; click here for part 1 and here for part 2
The Mullen family comprises of the parents
who are Irish and their children (adopted from 3 different countries). Luca,
the brother who joined them in the 2nd video is 3 years old and originally
from Eastern Europe. He just started learning English about a month ago.
Here are my #4 parenting tips to learn from
the video
1. Foster a love for reading and learning
from an early age. Kids can remember and memorise easily when they are read to
frequently. Reading is also important for them to excel well in school. Spend a few
minutes a day reading and telling stories together, it doesn’t have to be
formal; perhaps when you are in the kitchen making a meal or before they go to
bed or when NEPA, sorry PHCN has taken power and you want the generator to rest
because It’s been working all day (that’s the case these days in Nigeria), read
the messages on the bill boards as you drive on the road. Make it fun, talk
about the pictures and the characters or you can even make up your own stories.
2. Children can be multilingual, so which ever
part of planet earth you live, your child will understand your language and
other languages spoken around them. Even before they start to speak, baby and
toddler brains are pre-wired to learn up to 3 languages before age 6. The ability
kind of drop at about age 10-12 and ironically that is when they start to teach
us French in school.
4. The Love for God: Teach children how to
pray from an early age and it will become a habit that will last a lifetime. Don’t
discourage them on what they have to say to God even if they include twinkle, twinkle
little star in praise worship.
Thank you, very helpful
