KEEP CALM. No Power supply? No fuel? Here are Five simple Household tips you can do to help the situation.

These tips are in commemoration of Earth Day. Use less energy, produce less waste and turn your waste to wealth.  Contribute your bit by reducing your carbon foot prints (the total amount of carbon dioxide produced by your daily activities in a given time).

1.      Fuel is hard to come by now, so when you eventually get some to buy, conserve it by putting on the generator only when you need it, use your car only if you are going far away if not, take a walk or cycle (this is also good exercise for your body).  Go out, take some fresh air instead of putting on the generator just to put on the fan and watch TV.

2.      Reduce the amount of Energy you consume.

Use energy saving bulbs, put off the light and electronics when not in use. This way, you do not only save energy and also reduce your electricity bill (that is if you are using a prepaid meter in Nigeria), but it also reduces the load and pressure on the source of the power.

3.      Conserve water

Close the shower or tap when not in use, fix leaking taps.  If you use a borehole, this will make you pump water less frequently and also save energy.

4.  Plant a tree (it takes long to grow but you are using one as a “shade” because someone planted it a long time ago) or put an Indoor Plant in your living space, kitchen etc.

It livens the room, helps in cooling the room (especially at this time of hot whether) and good for purifying indoor air. Plants supply the oxygen we breathe in and use up the carbon dioxide we breathe out for their own growth. That way, oxygen level is increased in your home. This is what is called carbon cycle.

5.      Reduce the amount of waste you dispose and dispose waste properly, give out the things you no longer need to people who need them or to a charity organization; clothes, shoes, toys, furniture etc.. It will give room for  proper circulation of air in your home.
