Reasons why drinking artificially sweetened drinks during pregnancy may harm your baby.

There’s this heavenly satisfaction you feel after gulping a chilled bottle of soft drink during pregnancy. Sounds familiar? It’s really hard to resist.
But, a recent study on comparison of pregnant women’s diet to their babies body mass indexes (BMI) at 1 year old has shown that expectant moms who drink artificially sweetened beverages such as soft drinks on a daily basis could have babies who may end up overweight by their first birthday or later in life putting them at risk of obesity and related diseases such as diabetes in adulthood.

Hint: Limit your intake to no more than one artificially sweetened drink per week throughout your pregnancy and drink more water! Still your healthiest drink during pregnancy and after child birth.

Though the study is yet to prove how artificial sweeteners could lead to larger babies but they found an association. The reasons could be that: Artificial sweeteners can mess with gut bacteria that can affect how many calories you absorb from food. Pregnant women who drink artificially sweetened drinks on the regular could pass on these microbes to their babies, making their baby’s body favor weight gain.
Also some experts believe that artificial sweeteners in drinks, which have no calories, trick your body into thinking you're consuming calories when you're not, ultimately confusing your metabolism so much that you add more kilos which possibly can be passed along to your baby.
