Family Planning! It’s Your Life. It’s Your Responsibility.
World contraception day is
marked all over the world every 26th September to raise public
awareness about sex education, the need and various means of contraception.
Just saying you do not
want to have a baby or more babies does not prevent pregnancy, you have to take
action. A woman’s wellbeing is related to her ability to space and limit her
pregnancies. Using contraception, a.k.a. Family planning helps a woman to
strategize when she wants to get pregnant and how many kids she intends to have.
Planning also determines the outcome of each pregnancy as a lot of maternal and
infant mortality rate is linked to ill-termed pregnancies.
Family planning improves
education and economic empowerment for women and girls. Here are facts about using contraception according to World health Organization:
About 225 million women in
developing countries intend to delay or stop childbearing but do not practice
any method of family planning.
Family planning results in
less unintended pregnancies thus resulting in better societies.
Family planning gives you
the right to determine the number of children you want to have and how you want
to space your pregnancies.
Family planning methods
such as condoms help in prevention of sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV
Unsafe abortion practices
are common, family planning reduces the need for abortion thus preventing
deaths of mothers and children.
It’s the best investment
for happy families, communities and the nation.
Modern
day contraceptive methods include:
·
The Natural Method
·
Male and Female Condoms
·
Sub dermal implant
·
Intrauterine device (IUCD)
·
Diaphragm and cervical cap
·
Spermicides
·
Progestogen – only pills
·
Oral Contraceptive ‘The Pill’
·
Injectable contraceptive
·
Surgical contraception
Don’t be caught unawares,
having babies should be by choice, not by accident. Visit your local health
care provider for counselling on the effectiveness, advantages and
disadvantages of these methods.
I just want to add that
despite the campaign and fact that information about family planning is
widespread, do you know that family planning has remained low in Nigeria. According
to the Nigeria Demographic & Health Survey 2013, only about 10 percent married
women use modern contraception. Perhaps because, there are misconceptions/myths
that family planning may interfere with a woman’s health.
What are your thoughts on
family planning? Are you one of the 10 percent that has embraced ‘change’? LOL! Which methods are you
using? Please share your experience on choosing the contraceptive method that
has worked for you.

Despite the awareness, lots of women are ignorant of which method to use. Thanks for the info
ReplyDeleteOne should be able to discuss with the spouse on family planning. The injection worked pretty well for me and i didn't have any issues whatsoever.

ReplyDeleteAre the myths real?
ReplyDeleteThere are advantages, disadvantages and side effects. Your health care provider can help you choose a method that is suitable for you.
ReplyDeleteIt is good to embrace the use of contraceptive methods for families, but the seemingly after effect health disorder in some women remains a source of concern.
ReplyDeleteThe reason for the "after effect" is pretty straightforward. You are trying to prevent the body system from functioning properly. #can u see?# lols.
