This post is inspired by
my experience at the Mother and Child Expo last Saturday. I was at the
Biofem booth and they had a range of products on display but what caught my attention
was the Cod Liver Oil Syrup for children.
What comes to mind when
you hear Cod Liver Oil is fish (that medicine with the oily fish taste and
smell). I’ve known it since I was a little kid, my grandma called it “epo eja”.
She used to take the capsule and suggested the kids use the liquid too, even babies. I never liked it because of the smell. Fast forward now, it was prescribed for my son and he wouldn’t take it even when we got one that was flavored, he refused it and we stopped buying it after discarding the 3rd bottle unfinished. My son readily and happily took the Biosea orange flavored Cod liver oil syrup.

So back to the mata, why
supplement with Cod Liver oil?
Cod liver oil is the oil
in the liver of cod fish as you can guess. It contains Vitamins A and D and is also
rich in Omega-3 fatty acid found in fish.
It is commonly called the anti-
inflammatory disease fighter
because it can naturally be used to treat a variety of symptoms occurring from
infection.
While you can get all
these nutrients from eating well balanced meals, the supplements are needed to provide
us with healthy amount of these nutrients so as to reduce the risk of
deficiency that might occur from eating too many over processed food (that we
eat daily on-the-go). Omega 3 is found in oily fish like Salmon, Mackerel and Sardines.
Vitamin A sources are vegetables, beef liver, sweet potato and eggs. Vitamin D
on the other hand can be produced by your own skin simply by exposure to
sunlight (but most of the kids are usually indoors nowadays).
To cut the long story
short, it means adults and children will benefit from supplementing regularly
with Cod Liver Oil.
Such benefits include: Lowering
inflammation or infection, Improving brain function, bone & teeth
maintenance, healing wounds, Lowering high blood pressure and cholesterol level,
preventing heart diseases and diabetes, protecting eye sight, treating ear
infection, allergies and asthma, boosting fertility and growth & development
in children.
