Only 1 out of 20 people
living with Hepatitis today know they have it and just one out of 100 is being
treated. As the world marks world hepatitis day today, the World Health Organization
(WHO) urges countries to ACT NOW by educating people about the disease and increasing
access to testing and treatment services. Here are facts you should know about
the disease and its prevention.
Hepatitis virus causes
infection and inflammation of the liver.
Hepatitis B and C can lead
to severe diseases and possibly death.
Hepatitis B and C can be
transmitted through blood and other body fluids.
The virus can be
transmitted through unsafe sex and from an infected pregnant woman to her
unborn child.
About 400 million people
are infected with Hepatitis B and C around the world, this is more than 10 times
the number of people living with HIV and about 6-10 million new cases occur annually
around the world.
There is an effective
vaccine and treatment for Hepatitis B but none for Hepatitis C but there
has been a great increase in the treatment of the disease in the past few years. Yet in many countries, the cure is still out of most people’s reach as a
result of government policies and regulations.
Prevention:
Immunize
infants against Hepatitis B (this is available as part of their regular
vaccination schedule).
Practicing safer sex by
using protection and minimizing partners.
Health care practitioners
should effect blood safety strategies by screening all donated blood components
used for transfusion and also implement safe injection practices by eliminating
unnecessary and unsafe injections to protect against transmission.
The World Hepatitis Summit
will take place in Sao Paulo, Brazil on 29th- 31st March,
2017.
